Shady Carriages, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

In the heat of summer, the carriages board riders at hitching posts strategically positioned in the shade of large trees. This spot on one of the side streets in the colonial district is one of the shadiest as the street is almost completely tree lined.  We are not sure if the horses or the tourist appreciate the shade more.

Raleigh Tavern Bake Shop, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

This is the entry gate to the Raleigh Tavern Bake Shop which is located just behind the tavern. It is one of our favorite places to stop for a snack. They have a variety of cakes, cookies, breads along with coffee, tea, ginger ale, root beer or cider to wash it all down. The Union Jack is the signal that the shop is open for visitors. If Sir Walter was around to taste these goodies, he would be very proud of his namesake.

SIgn Of The Rhinoceros, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

The "Sign Of The Rhinoceros" is the name given this building and it bears the rather unusual rhinoceros shaped sign.  It is a private residence with this beautifully decorated window.  So how does this fit in with the historical experience in Colonial Williamsburg? It was somehow part of an alternate reality conspiracy, intrigue game for families available online and on site earlier this year.
