These students gather information for a colonial history fact finding game. Their question was, "Why was the capitol moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg, or Middle Plantation as it was then known?" These costumed employees of Colonial Williamsburg gladly guided them to the correct answers

I just love all the memories your blog brings to my mind of our short 3 years down south!. Seems like a lifetime ago.

ReplyDeleteThe Capitol was moved for several reasons: Jamestown was a swampy area subject to the insect infestations, etc. that come with it; the water was not good as the river is a mix of fresh and salt water which caused a variety of illnesses; the state house there burned several times; and, "Middle Plantation" was at higher elevation at about a mid-point between the James and York Rivers, with a better water supply and ample land to cultivate.
