Jamestown Settlement features replicas of the ships used by the settlers in 1607 to establish the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States. The map shows the path of their trip. The navigational plan was easily stated as, "go south until the butter melts, then go west."
Five months from London to Jamestown, can you imagine!!Gorgeous ship, but would have been a horrific journey!

An image of a bygone era. It generates romantic feelings in the viewer but imagine how difficult life on this ship must have been.

One of these replicas (think it was the Susan Constance) was in the shipyard at Newport News when I worked there in the early 80s. They were installing a radio antenna inside the mast in preparation for a trip to England in order to recreate the original voyage to the New World. It was stunning to see it tied up on one side of pier 2 and a Nimitz class aircraft carrier on the other side!
