Servant At The Peyton Randolph House, Colonial Williamsburg, Virgina

This young man is part of the presentation staff at the Peyton Randolph House in Colonial Williamsburg. They do a great presentation on the African-American experience in colonial times.  It is a perfect exhibition for Black History Month which is celebrated in February in the U.S. The first slaves arrived at Jamestown, Virginia in 1619.

  1. Nice photo!
Back in those days, would this guy be an edentured servant, slave, or simply an employee.

    1. He was an employee. Not "in character". Indentured servants are usually of European descent. Slave is a condition. We enslave people.

  3. But he probably wouldn't have worn dreadlocks! :)

It is a great photo, though. I like the Peyton Randolph house because they give you this story...

    1. Look up how old the dreadlock hairstyle is. It is NOT a NEW URBAN thing.
