The Jamestown Island Swamps, Williamsburg, Virginia

Jamestown Island

The early colonists selected Jamestown Island as their home base because of the deep water near the shore and ease in sighting and defending themselves against the Spanish. The downside to the location is that is very swampy. This photo is from the bridge on the driving tour of the island's wooded areas and was taken at the mid-point between high and low tide on the James River. Marsh and wetlands abound on the island.
