Apothecaries in colonial times did much more than dispense medicines; they acted as doctor, mid-wife, surgeon, as well as providing medicines and cures. As you can see from the second photo, there are a number of bottles and containers with ingredients for medicines. They really did not know how medicines worked but understood which ingredients stopped or relieved a particular symptom. We hope the guy in the first photo was not a tragic error.

ReplyDeleteI was wondering if the skeleton was the plunder of a grave robber! And if the deceased would mind having his bones on display ;-) Two great shots...I suppose back in the day a town that had an apothecary considered themselves very fortunate indeed!
