Sun Watching With NASA, Yorktown, Virginia

Some folks from the local NASA facility came to the Farmer's Market at Yorktown's Riverwalk Landing to set up their incredible telescopes with all the appropriate filters to allow direct observations of the sun. Through one, you could see solar flares and through another sun spots and much more.  They graciously shared their equipment and explained the science of what was viewed.

With this equipment you can see venus passing the sun very clearly today I assume. Next passing over a 107 years of so.

that must have been very interesting! I think I'm going to looking into getting one of those filters for my telescope. It's a simple one compared to these, but it works...
This made me think of one of the first lessons our parents teach us. "Don't stare at the sun!"

This would really be interesting, I can't imagine which kind of filter you need to watch the sun!

What a great idea! My photos of the transit were hampered by the semi-cloudy skies. I did see and photograph the annular eclipse a few weeks ago and placed it on my blog. Keep up the great work.
