Sun Watching With NASA, Yorktown, Virginia


Some folks from the local NASA facility came to the Farmer's Market at Yorktown's Riverwalk Landing to set up their incredible telescopes with all the appropriate filters to allow direct observations of the sun. Through one, you could see solar flares and through another sun spots and much more.  They graciously shared their equipment and explained the science of what was viewed.

Fifes And Drums At The Farmers' Market, Yorktown, Virginia



Saturday was the first day of Farmers' Market season at Yorktown's Riverwalk Landing. The Yorktown Fife and Drum unit opened the with lively music. Everyone seemed impressed with the musical skill and dedication of these young men and women.  There was good music, good food, and a wide variety of vendors on hand.

Memorial Wall, Yorktown, Virginia



These plaques are among a number adorning a wall at Yorktown's Riverwalk Landing to memorialize events and people related to Yorktown, presidents born in Virginia or who visited Yorktown.  Pictured are Presidents George Washington and Ronald Reagan; Compte De Rochambeau and Compte De Grasse, Frenchmen who assisted in the revolution; and the USS Yorktown. Plaques not shown feature presidents born in Virginia, in addition to the first President, George Washington, are Thomas Jefferson, 3rd; James Madison, 4th, James Monroe, 5th, William Henry Harrison, 9th; John Tyler, 10th; Zachary Taylor, 12th; and, Woodrow Wilson, 26th. In addition to President Reagan, other Presidents not born in Virginia who are memorialized are Chester A. Arthur, 21st, who visited for the centennial celebration in 1881, and Herbert Hoover, 31st, who visited for the sesquicentennial in 1931.  Other, non-presidents celebrated on the wall include the Marquis De Lafayette, a French nobleman who assisted in the revolution and Friederick Von Steuben, a military teacher who led a division at the battle at Yorktown in 1781.

Special Flower, Yorktown, Virginia


As we wade through winter, patiently waiting for the colors of spring, we found this really special flower at Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown.  Not only is it colorful year round; if there's a breeze it spins and delights children of all ages.  Hmm, we must have a touch of cabin fever.

Unique Patriot Tours, Yorktown, Virginia



Patriot Tours is a unique group based at Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown, Virginia.  They do very modern segway tours of the very historic colonial district of Historic Yorktown. They recently moved to larger accomodations and have a neat sign with the colonial man on a segway.

The Godspeed At Riverwalk Landing, Yorktown, Virginia




Jamestown Settlement's ship, Godspeed, with its fully costumed crew, sailed to Yorktown's Riverwalk Landing to participate it Yorktown Victory Weekend. The Godspeed is one of three replicas of the ships that brought settlers to Virginia in 1607 where they established the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States.  Each can be toured at Jamestown on a daily basis.

Yorktown Victory Weekend is part of the celebration of the events at Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. The events included a reenactment of Yorktown's Tea Party in 1774.  Later this week events include a parade, wreath laying ceremony, fife and drum corps performances, and a variety of events at the Yorktown Battlefield and Yorktown Victory Center.

Duke Of York, Yorktown, Virginia



They say that with real estate it's all about location. The Duke Of York Hotel in Yorktown has that without question.  It sits at the base of the hills on which Historic Yorktown is nestled and all the balconies overlook the Yorktown Beach, Riverwalk Landing and the York River. To reach the beach or shops, all you need to do is walk across the street. To take a quaint tour of the area, jump on the trolley.

Cannon At Riverwalk Landing, Yorktown, Virginia


This cannon replica sits on the riverside walkway at Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown, Virginia to commemorate the battle that led to Cornwallis' surrender to Washington during the Revolutionary War.  The morning sun was rising over the Kalmar Nyckel and the Alliance as the photo was taken.
