The Shoemaker at Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia
The shoemaker was a common trade in colonial days and one that existed in the colony as early as 1610. Shoes were made as stock or specially orderd to fit one's feet. The tools were simple and the product, particularly riding boots, were highly prized.
The shoemaker at Colonial Williamsburg advises that one should expect to spend a day's pay for a pair of shoes.

It's amazing all the skills that have been lost throughout the years... too bad!
Nice to see the concentrated working shoemaker. It's an endangered profession indeed.
Thank you so much for leaving your kind comment on my blog!
How wonderful that it gave me the opportunity to come visit you in your beautiful Williamsburg! I lived in DC until 2005 and have fond memories of Williamsburg.
Until we meet again in cyberspace,

Love all the photos of life as it was.
Very nice pictures of the shoemaker, at his trade. You are fortunate to live in the Williamsburg area. You have blogging material for years about that area :-)
We're planning to visit a village similar to Williamsburg this weekend. The village is located in Genesee County, NY. I hope to come home with lots of pictures to share.
I expect those shoes lasted a lot longer than they do these days. Great photos and always a pleasure to see what is going on in Williamsburg, one of my favorite places to visit.
An English Girl Rambles
It's been YEARS (even decades) since I visited there but I remember it being an interesting place. Can you imagine doing anything like that way back then? So much work.
Wow such classic era. Thank you for sharing.
Happy weekend ahead.

A Williamsburg shoemaker making shoes using the tools and techniques of the 18th century. It's fun to stay and watch that.
