Welcome To Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

When you visit Colonial Williamsburg, you can walk through the historic area without charge, but to go inside the Governor's Palace, Capitol or other exhibits, you need a pass.  This ticket center is adjacent to Merchants Square and will help you with that.  If you buy a ticket, you can also catch one of these buses that circle the outskirts of the colonial district (so as not to interfere with the historical ambiance) or take you to the Visitor Center.  They also have runs to Jamestown and Yorktown via the Colonial Parkway. The ticket is well worth the price.

it is reasonable to expect to pay to support the expense of the people and physical plant maintenance for a place such as Williamsburg, with all of its activities. I bet a lot of people do not realize that it is a private foundation and not a national park and is therefore not supported by tax money.

I agree with Dave, I would expect to pay to visit such a place, I should imagine the upkeep is quite costly, it looks so well cared for.

The cost is certainly worth it! And if you're an educator or in the military you get a good discount. Also, buy the $12 souvenir mug. They fill it up free after the initial purchase and you can bring it back with you each time you go. An especially great deal in the heat when you need to stay hydrated!
