The 1607 Jamestown settlers came in search of money making endeavors. One of the early efforts was the establishment of a glasshouse in 1608 and the importation of German glass makers to run it. The glasshouse was built about a mile from Jamestown along the river to provide easy access to sand and timber to fuel the furnaces. The items made are replicas of artifacts found in the area and are sold on site.

Glass blowers are very talented. It is remarkable that they started making glass so early after Williamsburg's founding.

I work with lampworked glass and have only blown glass 4 or 5 times. It takes patience and a coordination so that you keep the molten glass balanced and moving so that it does not become a glob on the floor. Great photos

Been to Venice, Italy, very often (I lived there for a while), and every time I go back, I just have to go to one of the many glass factories in Murano, and just watch.
