The recent cold spell required winter gardeners to be prepared. The covering protects from frost and cold while keeping the ground warm for fledgling plants. The winter crops look just fine.
Here that's not possible, unless one has a greenhouse, but in the fall, when plants or vegetables are still in the ground, and a frost is coming, they do advise covering plants over on cold nights.
