Jamestown Settlement Replica Ship, Williamsburg, Virginia

Jamestown Settlement features replicas of the ships used by the settlers in 1607 to establish the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States.  The map shows the path of their trip. The navigational plan was easily stated as, "go south until the butter melts, then go west."

We are going to be studying this time period this year! Can't wait!

Love the ship - but wouldn't have wanted to sail across the ocean in it! Brave men all....and the women when they came.

An image of a bygone era. It generates romantic feelings in the viewer but imagine how difficult life on this ship must have been.

A simple plan that obviously worked, even if it did take a long time!

A wonderful ship.
These days the tall ships race is visiting Stavanger, a town close to my hometown.
It was amazing to walk around and look.

Greetings

One of these replicas (think it was the Susan Constance) was in the shipyard at Newport News when I worked there in the early 80s. They were installing a radio antenna inside the mast in preparation for a trip to England in order to recreate the original voyage to the New World. It was stunning to see it tied up on one side of pier 2 and a Nimitz class aircraft carrier on the other side!

What a beautiful replica! Very interesting post. I liked the 'butter' thing. :-)

Just imagine how "horrific" it was for the millions of africans who had to make that voyage in those ships.
