The View From Above, Yorktown, Virginia

VIMS from the Coleman Bridge

This is part of the view from atop the Coleman Bridge which spans the York River from Yorktown to Gloucester. The large building at the foot of the bridge is the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, which is part of the College of William & Mary. The bridge is one of the few that rotate two spans to allow ships to pass through rather than being a draw bridge.  Naval and Coast Guard ships, as well as barges, pass through regularly.

Everywhere A Sign, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Everywhere A Sign

Unlike today where neon, L.E.D., and a wide variety of electronic signs sparkle, blink and blind to get our attention, signs in colonial days were more direct. The bold colors and picture on this sign are visible down the street and, for those delegates in town, from the windows of the Capitol, reminding them that Mr. Charlton's coffee shop was brewing a cup just for them.

Riding Tandem On The Parkway, Williamsburg, Virginia

Tandem Bike on the Parkway

This is an odd time of year for outdoor activities in Williamsburg. Winters here are generally mild but the temperature from day to day can easily vary twenty degrees and even a mild day can suddenly feel brisk within minutes of the sun setting. So, when you catch a day in the 60's, a tandem bike ride down the Colonial Parkway with a break along the James River is one of many perfect choices.
