This is an unusual pose for a President's statue. I wonder if it references a specific moment in Jefferson's life.
As long as I have lived around Williamsburg, I have never been on the campus at William and Mary - shame on me! This is a very nice statue - a rather "saucy" pose, I think!
Perhaps he's contemplating all the activity of late at UVA.

My favorite quote about Jefferson is that President Kennedy had a dinner at the White House for Nobel Prize winners, and he said that the group was the greatest collection of brain power for a White House meal since Thomas Jefferson dined alone.

I attended the College of William & Mary and it was always said and proven that the eyes of Jefferson are looking into the women's bathroom on the second floor. It was always a clue in any scavenger hunt on campus. Check out the Tyler family memorial garden on the other side of the Sunken Garden, find your way to the circle on ground, face the wall and speak, it sounds as if you are in a bubble, and can only be heard by you, and only standing on that key disc in the ground. :)
